Eleventh child in his family, he was raised in a pious household; his family went to Mass daily. Lodovico entered junior seminary of Cremona in 1900. Ordained a priest in 1912. Served as secretary to his bishop. Attracted by the spirituality of Saint Peter Julian Eymard, in 1913 he entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Drafted into the army at the start of World War I, he served several years as a private in a front line medical corps. In 1920 he was finally able to make his vows to join the Congregation in Spain. He was assigned to set up the Congregation seminary, first in Lodigiano, Italy and then in Ponteranica in the diocese of Bergamo, Italy. From 1923 to 1935 he devoted himself to the spiritual formation of seminarians and novices, working in Ponteranica as Director of Students and Master of Novices, leading by example to encourage holiness, devotion to the Eucharist, and enthusiasm for the vocation. Congregation Provincial in 1934. Congregation Superior General from 1937 to 1949 after which he returned to serving as Novice Master at Ponteranica, a post he held till the day he died.
