Venerable Jeanne Mance
Profile
Daughter of Catherine Émonot and Charles Mance, a prosecutor for the king of France. When her mother died, Jeanne took care of her eleven brothers and sisters. At age 34 she became a lay immigrant and missionary to New France, landing in Montreal, Québec in the spring of 1642. She served as the first nurse in New France, working with the sick in her home. She founded the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital, the oldest hospital in Montreal, in 1645, and directed its operations for 17 years.
