Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo Juco

Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo JucoProfile

The eldest child of Jusepe Iuco, a Chinese convert to Christianity, and Maria Jeronima; Ignacia was the only one of their children to survive to adulthood. Baptized on 4 March 1663. Though her parents wanted her to marry, Ignacia felt a call to religious life, and in her 20’s she left home with only a needle and pair of scissors to make her way in the world. She lived as solitary lay woman under the spiritual direction of Jesuits. Her reputation for holiness and spiritual wisdom drew other women to her, and they became the foundation of a new congregation. She founded the Religious of the Virgin Mary for them in 1684, and served as its superior the rest of her life; the Religious continue their good work today.
