The son of Giovanni Battista Ferro, a shoemaker, and Carlotta Borio, Giovanni studied in Milan, Turin and Rome, Italy. He joined the Order of Regular Clerics of Somasca on 5 August 1912, and made his solemn profession on 14 March 1924 in Genoa, Italy. Ordained a priest on 11 April 1925. Teacher and rector of the Collegio Trevisio in Casale Monferrato, Italy from 1931 to 1938. Rector of the Collegio Gallio in Como, Italy in 1938. He ministered to the poor, displaced and refugees, including Jews fleeing the Nazis and Mussolini’s relatives fleeing vengeful mobs, during World War II. Elected Somascan provincial superior on 18 August 1948. Chosen bishop of Bova, Italy and Archbishop of Reggio Calabria-Bova, Italy on 14 September 1950 where he served for over 26 years. Council Father at four sessions of the Second Vatican Council.
