Against the strong wishes of his family, Giovanni was ordained a priest on 19 December 1818. Following a course of spiritual excercises conducted at the Abbey of San Felice in Giano dell’Umbria, Italy by Saint Caspar del Bufalo, Father Giovanni became one of the first members of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Friend of Saint Caspar.

Noted spiritual director, especially of young people. Spiritual director of Saint Maria de Mattias. General-Director of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood for 25 years, preaching throughout Italy, supporting the founding of new Missionary houses in several countries, and training many new members of the Missinaries. Adviser to Pope Pius IX whom he convinced to extend the Feast of the Precious Blood to the whole Church in 1849.
