Studied theology under Blessed Giuseppe Allamano and Blessed Luigi Boccardo. Ordained a priest in the archdiocese of Turin, Italy on 29 June 1903. Parish priest in Carmagnola, Italy and then in Turin. Chosen auxiliary bishop of Turin and titular bishop of Eduoxias on 24 January 1916; he served for over 46 years as both auxiliary bishop and, simultaneously, a parish priest.
