Venerable Francisco Camacho

Also known as

  • Francisco Rodríguez-Camacho Vivas

Francisco grew up on a farm. He joined the army at age 20 and fought against the French at the siege of Lleida, Spain. He was transferred to Colombia where he became seriously ill; was treated by the Hospitallers of Saint John of God where he learned of the Order and its work. Upon his recovery, he was transferred to Lima, Peru where he served for 3 years as a military governor over a large area. He then resigned from the military, wandered around South America, and in 1663 returned to Lima where he answered the call to religious life and joined the Hospitallers. He served nearly 35 years as a Hospitaller friar, much of it going door to door in Lima to care for the poor sick, and beg alms for the Hospitallers‘ work.
