Francesco early felt called to the priesthood but his family was too poor for him to be educated, and so, instead, he worked the fields. At age 18 he enlisted in the military, and at 20 was accepted into the seminary of the archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace, Italy. Ordained a priest on 18 April 1908.

Rector of the seminary in Catanzaro from October 1912 to 1919. Appointed spiritual director of the seminary on 14 December 1919. While serving at the rectory, he was also the parish priest in nearby Stella. Appointed canon of the cathedral of Catanzaro by Pope Pius XI on 11 June 1923. Father Francesco helped found a group of Dominican tertiaries in the area. He worked with abandoned children and refugees during World War II. Spiritual director of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd for five years.
