The daughter of James and Elinor McAuley, her father died when Catherine was 5, her mother when the girl was 20; she and her brother James then moved in with Protestant relatives. At age 25 she became household manager for William and Catherine Callaghan, and for the next 20 years she worked and care for them and spent her free time teaching catechism to household servants and poor children of the area.

In 1822 Catherine inherited the estate of the Callaghans, and used her new resources to found a home to care for homeless women and children, which opened on 24 September 1827. Founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy who continue their good works today with over 5,000 sisters and nearly half a million partners in ministry.
