Ordained a priest of the Salesians of Don Bosco on 23 September 1905. Chosen bishop of Katowice, Poland on 14 December 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Chosen archbishop of Gniezno e Poznan, Poland in 24 June 1926. Elevated to Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria della Pace on 20 June 1927 by Pope Pius XI. Participated in the Conclave of 1939 that elected Pope Pius XII. A noted critic of the Nazis, he was the only member of the College of Cardinals to be arrested by the Gestapo. Chosen archbishop of Gniezno, Poland and Warsaw, Poland on 4 March 1946. Founded the Society of Christ for Poles Living Abroad. After the fall of the Nazis, Father August became a noted critic of the Communist regime in Poland.
