Sister Maria Rosa Carafa

Sister Maria Rosa CarafaAlso known as

  • Rosa Carafa di Traetto

Born a twin and a noble, the daughter of the Marquis Joseph Carafa di Traetto and niece of Cardinal Carafa, archbishop of Benevento, Italy. As a young woman she felt a call to religious life, avoided the social scene as it was often scandalous, and turned away many proposals of marriage. Her poor health made her unsuitable for the rigorous life of many religious orders, but in 1876 she joined the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart, Franciscan tertiaries, in Naples, Italy. She served as novice mistress and as superior of those Handmaids who lived at home without taking vows.
