Saint Mark of Atina

Also known as

  • Marco Galileo

Disciple of Saint Peter the Apostle. As they travelled to Rome, Italy in 45, Saint Peter ordained Marc as an evangelizing bishop in the area of Atina, Italy. Martyred in the persecutions of Domitian.

It is now believed that the document that describes Marco’s work, life and death, Passio beatissimi Marci Atinae civitatis episcopi was a forgery, created in 1128 by Peter the Deacon during an exile from Monte Cassino Abbey.
