Deacon. Archbishop of Ravenna, c.905. 122nd pope.

An active and energetic ruler, John crowned Emperor Berengarius in 915, worked to end invasions by Saracens, and led united Italian armies against them. Worked to bring the Slavs of Dalmatia into closer union with Rome, including the use of Latin at the liturgical language. He tried to created a stronger union with the Bulgarians, but the Patriarch of Constantinople worked against him. Active in ecclesiastic and political affairs in Italy, Germany, and France. When he allied with Hugh of Burgundy, he was imprisoned by Hugh’s enemy, Mazoria of Rome, and he died soon after.
