Pope Clement XIV

Pope Clement XIVProfile

Conventual Franciscan. Cardinal in 1759. Involved in papal affairs for years prior to his election as pope in 1769. From Pope Clement XIII, he inherited the hostility of every state in Catholic Europe. Forced into suppressing the Jesuits, which removed the papacy‘s only independent support, and placed the Church at the mercy of the political machinations of secular princes.
