First abbot of Saint Gall; martyr; died Werd Island, near Eschnez, Switzerland in 759. He is one of the founders of the Abbey of Saint Gall, where he built the monastery and introduced the Benedictine rule, and is one of the most popular saints in Switzerland. Relics at Saint Gall. Feast, 16 November.
