Ludwig Windthorst


Statesman. He served in the Prussian Diet, was elected president of the chamber and in 1851 was appointed Minister of Justice. When the North German Confederation was formed, he was a member of both the Reichstag and of the Prussian Landtag; led the Center party against Bismarck in the Kulturkampf; and advocated the protective tariff and workingmen’s insurance laws. He founded the “People’s Union for Catholic Germany.”
