Fortunata Evolo

Fortunata EvoloAlso known as

  • Natuzza (familiar form of Fortunata)

The daughter of Maria Angela Valente, Fortunata never knew her father as he moved to Argentina to look for work just before she was born, and he never returned. The girl grew up helping around the house, and never went to school, never learned to read or write. She married Pasquale Nicolace, a carpenter, in 1944, and they had five children.

Reported to have received a vision of Our Lady, Jesus and Saint John, and to have healed people by prayer. Each Easter season she was beset with painful blood coloured marks, images and words on her skin, some appearing like the stigmata, others as words in Hebrew or Aramaic. Her Cause for Canonization has opened.
