Feast of Saint Mark, Evangelist, by Father Médaille

“You are the salt of the earth.” (Matthew 5:13) Our Lord said to them; which means that they are to heal what is wounded, preserve what is sound, and impart a relish for things eternal; but if the salt have lost its savour, it is good for nothing, it will be thrown away and trodden disdain fully under foot. This is what happens to labourers who are not what they ought to be.

“You are the light of the world.” Evangelical labourers should receive light from God, as do the stars from the sun. Study, prayer, and meditation, will fill us with this heavenly light.

“A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.” Gospel labourers are exposed to the view of the world: they should set only good example.
