Father John Bapst


Jesuit missionary. Sent to the Indian Mission in Maine, he was later pastor to the scattered Catholics in Eastport, Bangor, and Ellsworth. While at Ellsworth, during the Know-nothing movement, he was tarred, feathered, and expelled from the vicinity by order of the town council. He built the first church in Bangor in 1856, became rector of Boston College in 1859, and then superior of the Jesuit mission of New York and Canada.
