Father John Anthony Hardon

Father John Anthony HardonProfile

The son of John and Anna (Jevin) Hardin, his father died when the boy was about a year old and his mother worked nights as a cleaning woman the rest of her life. She was a pious woman who attended daily Mass and passed her faith along to John. He attended Catholic elementary and high schools in Cleveland, Ohio, taught by members of the Brothers of Mary. He developed a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and picked up the habit of opening and closing classes with prayers. He studied at John Carroll University, and while he considered a career in medicine, the call to the religious life was too strong, and he was drawn to the academic rigour of the Jesuits.

After graduating university, John became a Jesuit novice in 1936. He obtained a master’s degree in philosophy in 1941, and was ordained a Jesuit priest on 18 June 1947.

His Cause for Canonization has begun.

Obedience is the test of our love of God. His laws are God’s way of enabling us to prove our love for Him; there is no obedience where there is no love, there is much obedience where there is much love. – Father John Hardon
