Jesuit missionary. Spiritual student of Saint José de Anchieta. John changed his name on being adopted by a Portuguese family whom he accompanied to Brazil, where he became a Jesuit and spent his life in missionary labors among Indian cannibal tribes. He was famous for his austerities.
