Fifth of seven children born to René and Anne (née Vandelanotte) Mahieu. He studied in Brussels, Belgium, and in England where he became acquainted with the work and speeches of Ghandi. Soldier in the Belgian army. Trappist Cistercian monk of Scourmont Abbey outside Forges, Belgium, making his final vows in 1940. Ordained a priest in 1941. Taking Indian citizenship, he founded the Syro-Malankara rite Kristiya Sanyasa Samaj, Kurisumala Ashram, which in 1998 became affiliated with the Trappist Order. His Cause for Canonization has opened.
