Father Jean Pierre Aulneau


Missionary and martyr. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1720, arrived in Quebec, Canada in 1734, and was sent on a mission to the West to study the languages of the Cree and Assiniboin nations and to penetrate to the Mandan Indians. Arriving at Lake of the Woods, in the fall of 1735, he wintered in Fort Charles, Minnesota, and in June, 1736, set out with a party to procure provisions and ammunition. They were overtaken by Sioux Indians and murdered.
