Charles Warren Stoddard


(1843-1909), author and convert, born Rochester, New York, died Monterey, California. On his frequent trips to the South Seas, he became intimate with Stevenson and visited Father Damien at Molokai. As a newspaper correspondent he traveled in Europe, Palestine, and Egypt; and for a while taught literature at Norte Dame University and the Catholic University at Washington. His best works are “The Lepers of Molokai,” “Exits and Entrances,” and “Idyls.”
