Butler’s Lives of the Saints – Saint Goar, Priest and Confessor

Aquitain gave this saint his birth and education; but out of a desire of serving God entirely unknown to the world, in 519 he travelled into Germany, and settling in the territory of Triers, he shut himself in his cell, and arrived at such an eminent degree of sanctity as to be esteemed the oracle and miracle of the whole country. He resolutely refused the archbishopric of Triers, and died in 575. Bound his cell arose the town of Saint Guver, on the left bank of the Rhine between Wesel and Boppard.
