(Saint) Pope, Martyr (April 22) (2nd century) An Italian by birth, the successor of Pope Saint Anicetus. He lived in the time of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He was distinguished for charity to the poor and for watchfulness over the Churches, just then threatened by the rising heresy of Montanus. There is a dispute about the exact date of his death, which took place between A.D. 170 and A.D. 182. He is venerated as a Martyr.
