(Saint) Pope, Martyr (November 19) (3rd century) The successor of Pope Saint Urban I (A.D. 230), in the reign of the mild Emperor, Alexander Severus. After the murder of the latter (A.D. 235) by the usurper, Maximin, Saint Pontianus was banished to the Island of Sardinia, and a few months later succumbed to the hardships he was compelled to endure.
