(Saint) (September 9) (17th century) A Spanish Jesuit, for forty years missionary in South America, where he laboured for the salvation of the African Negroes and for the abolition of the slave trade. He died September 8, A.D. 1654, and was canonised by Pope Leo XIII as “Apostle of the Negroes.”
