(Saint) Abbot (November 16) (8th century) Of Teutonic origin and already a priest, he was (A.D. 720) appointed Abbot of the monastery of Saint Gall in Switzerland. In it he restored the observance of the Rule of Saint Columban (later replaced by that of Saint Benedict). He was remarkable for his charity to the poor and for his patience in suffering and persecution. He ended his holy life A.D. 759, as a hermit in an island of the Rhine.
