(Saint) Virgin Martyr (November 1) (2nd century) During the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, a certain Senator discovered that one of his slaves, by name Mary, refused at a festival to partake of viands which had been consecrated to the gods of Rome. He imprisoned her, but, being accused of harbouring a Christian, delivered her over to the populace, who were clamouring for her death. Yet these same people, witnessing her patient endurance of torture, induced her judges to remand her to prison. There she expired from the effects of her wounds (A.D. 120).
