Book of Saints – Hermas of Philippi

(Saint) Bishop (May 9) (1st century) A Roman Christian, disciple of Saint Paul and mentioned by him in his Epistle to the Romans (16:14). The Greeks make him Bishop of Philippi and honour him with the title of Apostle. Whether he ended his strenuous life by martyrdom or not is uncertain. By mistake some have attributed to him the famous work entitled “Pastor”; but it was certainly not written till well after the beginning of the second century, long after the death of this Saint Hermas. The “Hernias Pastor” of the book is another personage whose name does not occur in our Catalogues of Saints.
