Book of Saints – Elgiva


ELGIVA (Saint) Queen, Widow. (May 18) (10th century) The mother of Kings Edwy and Edgar, and wife of King Edmund, the brother of Athelstan. On the death of her husband she retired to King Alfred’s monastery at Shaftesbury, and there closed (A.D. 971) a life wholly spent in the discharge of her duties as wife and mother, and in works of piety and charity.
