Book of Saints – Dionysius – 8 May

DIONYSIUS (DENIS) (Saint) Bishop (May 8) (2nd century) The sixth of the Bishops of Vienne in Dauphine (France). He, like his five predecessors, has been commemorated in all the Western Martyrologies. Ado, himself a Martyrologist and Bishop of Vienne in the ninth century, tells us that Saint Dionysius, successor of Saint Justus, lived till the reign of Pertinax (A.D. 193). He is said to have been one of the ten missioners sent into Gaul by Pope Saint Sixtus I, early in the century with Saint Peregrinus. Some have erroneously described him as a Martyr.
