Book of Saints – Bertilla


BERTILLA (Saint) Virgin (November 5) (7th century) An Abbess of the Benedictine Order in the monastery of Jouarre in the Diocese of Meaux. She was chosen to be the first Abbess of Chelles, where she died, having presided over her community for more than forty-six years (A.D. 692). Queen Bathilde, the foundress, took the veil at Chelles, as did Saint Hereswitha or Hereswide, Queen of East Anglia and sister of Saint Hilda of Whitby.
