Book of Saints – Basilissa – 9 January

BASILISSA (Saint) Virgin (January 9) (4th century) The wife of Saint Julian the Martyr with whom she is commemorated. They were Syrians of Antioch, and had agreed on taking a vow of perpetual chastity, to be observed, even though married. This vow they faithfully kept. Saint Basilissa died a natural death; but has been honoured as a Martyr both on account of her own sufferings for the Faith and because of her being commemorated in one festival with Saint Julian, whom she encouraged to offer the sacrifice of his life during the persecution under Diocletian, in the first years of the fourth centurv.
