BASIL and EMMELIA (Saints) (May 30) (4th century) This Saint Basil, son of Saint Macrina the Elder, and Saint Emmelia his wife, were the parents of Saint Basil the Great, of Saint Gregory Nyssen, of Saint Peter of Sebaste, and of Saint Macrina the Younger. Exiled as a Christian with his wife in the time of the persecuting Emperor Galerius Maximianus, he returned after the peace of the Church to his native city of Caesarea in Cappadocia, and lived to a great age. He died some time before A.D. 370. Saint Gregory Nazianzen, the friend of his children, styles him ” the instructor of all men in Christian virtue.”
