(Saint) Apostle (August 24) (1st century) One of the Twelve, by many thought to be the Nathanael, the “Israelite without guile ” of Saint John’s Gospel. Tradition tells us that he preached the Gospel after the Ascension in North-West India, and afterwards in Asia Minor, and that in the end he suffered martyrdom in Greater Armenia. Some say that he was crucified, others that he was flayed alive. His relics have for the last thousand years been enshrined in his Church in Rome, situated on the Island in the Tiber.
