Book of Saints – Anacletus

bas relief statue of Pope Saint Cletus, date and artist unknown; Saint Peter's Basilica, Rome, ItalyArticle

(Saint) Pope, Martyr (July 13) (2nd century) According to the Liber Pontificalis, Saint Anacletus was ordained priest by Saint Peter. His identity with Saint Cletus has been the subject of great discussion, but whereas the latter was a Roman, Saint Anacletus was an Athenian, according to the Catalogus Felicianus. The Roman Church has always distinguished the two Popes, keeping the Feast of Saint Cletus on April 26 and that of Saint Anacletus on July 13. Saint Anacletus is styled a Martyr in the ancient Martyrologies, and is said to have suffered during the persecution of Trajan (A.D. 107).
