Blessed Ricardo Gil Barcelón

Blessed Ricardo Gil BarcelonMemorial

One of ten children born to Francesco and Francesca Gil Barcelon. As a young man, he enrolled in the Teruel Normal School to become a teacher, but the director was a Freemason who harassed and eventually expelled Ricardo for his Catholicism. Served as a soldier in the Philippines in the Spanish army during the Spanish-American war.

Priest in the Archdiocese of Valencia, Spain, ordained on 24 September 1904. Friend of Saint Luigi Orione, and a member of the Sons of Divine Providence. Spiritual mentor of Blessed Antonio Isidoro Arrué Peiró. The two had a ministry to the local poor, and at a tuberculosis hospital that most ministers avoided. Martyred by anarchist militiamen in the Spanish Civil War while holding up a crucifix and crying “Long live Christ the King!”.
