Blessed Manuel López Álvarez

Blessed Manuel López ÁlvarezMemorial

Born to a peasant family, Manuel was baptized on the day he was born. Ordained as a priest in the archdiocese of Granada, Spain on 16 July 1905. Parish priest in Alcolea, Spain. In the time leading up to the Spanish Civil War, Father Manuel came increasingly in conflict with antiCatholic elements – he had a shotgun pulled on him for officiating at a funeral, and had to sleep in his church to run off would-be arsonists. On 20 August 1936, he was reported by Communist sympathizers to the militia who seized him along with eight other Catholics. The group was loaded into a truck, driven to a cemetery and murdered. Martyr.
