Member of the Benedictines, making his profession on 10 November 1855. Ordained a priest on 19 October 1862 at the Saint Lawrence Abbey in Ampleforth, England. Chosen auxiliary bishop of Newport and Menevia, Wales and titular bishop of Caesaropolis on 22 July 1873; he was elevated to the bishop of Newport and Menevia on 18 February 1881, and served there over 42 years. He wrote a number of works on the faith, and many of his sermons and lectures have been published.
