As a boy, Hannibal served as a page at the court of King Charles V of Spain. He joined the Franciscan friars at the convent of Alcala, Spain on 17 May 1562, taking the name Francesco. Taught theology at the Franciscan convent in Mantua, Italy. Provincial of his Order in 1578. Minister General of the Order of Observant Friars Minor c.1579, visiting houses in Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands to see to their needs and insure their adherence to Franciscan life and spirituality. Chosen bishop of Cefal├╣, Italy on 26 October 1587. Chosen bishop of Pavia, Italy on 29 January 1593. Chosen bishop of Mantua on 30 April 1593. Apostolic nuncio to France for Pope Clement VIII from 10 May 1596 till 1599. During his career as superior, bishop and diplomat, he continued to wear a Franciscan habit, travelled on foot, and live by the Rule of his Order. His Cause for Canonization for a life of heroic virtues has opened.
