Baron John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton


Professor of modern history at Cambridge. He studied at Oscott and under Dollinger at Munich, and became Liberal M.P. for Carlow, Ireland, 18591865. At the time of Vatican Council I, he strongly opposed the declaration of the infallibility of the pope. The “Letters of Quirinus” have been attributed to him. The “Cambridge Modern History” was begun under his auspices.
