A symbol of temporal victory, and of spiritual victory over sin, death, and idolatry. It may indicate that a saint has a military connection, or was a missionary who carried the banner of Truth to foreign climes. During a sermon, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, a banner is placed before it. It is associated in Christian art with Jesus after His Resurrection, indicative of his victory over death. The Lamb of God carries a banner, indicative of his victory over death.
