Archbishop Thomas William Croke


Priest in the diocese of Cloyne, Ireland, ordained on 29 May 1846. He labored among the Irish peasantry during the years of misery following the great famine. Bishop of Auckland, New Zealand on 23 June 1870. Took part in Vatican Council I, and in 1874 was transferred to Cashel, Ireland. Archbishop of Cashel on 24 January 1875. There he vigorously supported the Irish national cause, and made several visits to Rome, Italy in its defense. He labored to improve the education of his people, and his counsels aided greatly in the establishment of the National University. The main Gaelic Athletic Association stadium in Dublin, Ireland is named Croke Park in honour of the Archbishop.
