Joined the Franciscans in 1959. Studied at the Saint Francis Novitiate in Teutopolis, Illinois. Obtained a bachelor degree in philosophy at Our Lady of Angels House of Philosophy through Quincy College in Illinois. Held a master of divinity from Saint Joseph Theological Seminary in Teutopolis. Ordained on 24 June 1966. Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland, Ohio and Titular Bishop of Furnos Maior on 30 June 1979. Received a Ph.D. in theology in 1981 from The Union Graduate School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Apostolic Administrator of Atlanta, Georgia on 10 July 1990. Archbishop of Atlanta, Georgia on 30 April 1991; he served a little over a year.
