apostle

Derivation

  • Greek: one who is sent; envoy

Article

The name is given in the New Testament first of all to the twelve whom our Lord chose. “The names of the twelve apostles,” Saint Matthew says, “are these: the first, Simon,” etc. But it is by no means restricted to them: Matthias and Paul were of course Apostles, though not of the twelve; so was Barnabas.
