angels in artAbout

Angels are seldom represented before the time of Constantine the Great; the oldest fresco in which an angel appears is a 2nd-century Annunciation. The winged angel does not appear until the 4th century. At first angels were not represented unless historically necessary, but after the 5th century they become favourite subjects, and were painted as attendants on the principal figures of a picture.
