William Starke Rosecrans

[William Starke Rosecrans]

Military strategist, inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, politician, and United States Army officer. While teaching at West Point Military Academy, he became a Catholic. In the Civil War he won high repute in command of the Army of Cumberland until defeated at Chickamauga. Brother of Sylvester Horton Rosecrans. Awarded the Laetare Medal in 1896.
