Son of Ambrosio, a carpenter and sacristan of his church, and María del Rosario; he was baptized at the age of one day. Began to study religion at the convent of San Francisco in Bogotá, Colombia, but had to stop in 1861 when the government seized all Church property. Ordained on 27 May 1866. Parish priest in Cúcuta, Colombia. Co-adjutor of the diocese of Bucaramanga, Colombia in 1875. Joined the Franciscans in 1881. Chaplin of the church of San Francsico in Bogotá. Attended the General Chapter of the Franciscan Order in Rome, Italy in 1895, and there met Pope Leo XIII. Chaplain of the church of San Diego in Bogotá on 18 December 1897 where he served for 30 years. Known as a great spiritual advisor to all, he ministered to the homeless and was consulted by presidents of Colombia. Tens of thousands turned out for his wake and funeral.
